Beau Chi MIN.

That is how I thought his name was pronounced something reminiscent of perhaps some great Chinese leader of old. but was a way off. Francois Beauchemin (frahn-SWUH, boh-sheh-MEH) today's entry for CSN appeared in only 20 games this season for the Ducks. Due to a torn left ACL. (he did play over 150 the past 2 season for the ducks.) At the time of his injury he was 4th in the league in Goals Scored Among Defense-men.

Its the Real Thing!

Toledo Rockets

Jeff Cola #16
(CO-La)

Freshman

Outfielder

6'0"/ 175lbs.

Bats: L Throws: R

Always refreshing, always makes you smile, its always Jeff "Coca" Cola. Jeff is a freshman on the Rockets team that is just 2 games under .500. For his first season he is batting .340 with 7 RBI. Not bad for a freshman. He's played in 20 games this season and has started 13 of those games. He's stole 2 bases in 3 attempts. He was rated the 65th best prospect in the State of Ohio coming out of high school where his hobbies included all things D.A.R.E. Wow. What a great club to be apart of. I don't know about you but the last time I took D.A.R.E. was in middle school. Makes you wonder if Mr. Cola is the Real Thing?

Coca-Cola has unveiled their new slogan to the public and its "Open Happiness" maybe that's why Jeff Cola was a part of D.A.R.E. because he opened too much Happiness.

We here at the CSN Blog hope that's not the case but we know that Jeff Cola is the real thing.

Goot!

Miami of Ohio Redhawks

(No Image Available)
Chris Gutschenritter #36
GOOT-shen-ritter

Sophomore (walk-on)

Pitcher

6'1"/190 lbs.

Bats: L Throws: L

Not much to talk about with this guy. He's a walk on at a MAC school from Atlanta, GA. He actually has no statistics for this year or last year. Apparently, this guy just rides the pine and comes to practices.

The only thing that his bio says about him on the team's site is that he threw a no-hitter in High School in 2007. He was also named one of Baseball America's Top 300 players. Which makes you wonder why is he not playing at Miami of Ohio?

Sorry Goot your name and name alone justified a mention on the CSN Blog but dude c'mon at least try and get in a game at a MAC school.

Tea and Crumpets

Taking a break from the College names to give you a spectacular MLB name.

Texas Rangers
Taylor Teagarden #2
(tee-gar-den)

Catcher

Rookie (First Full Year)

6'1"/ 200 lbs.

Bats: R Throws: R

Taylor Teagarden is a one of the talented catchers for the Texas Rangers along with Jarrod Saltalamaccia. For all intensive purposes Teagarden is the back up to Salty. And his numbers show why this is so. Currently he is batting .067 with 1 hit and 1RBI. I guess he needs to adjust to the pitching in the majors. Last year he got in 16 games and batted .319 with 6HR and 17RBI. I know that Texas is high on both Salty and Teagarden. That they thought about trading one of them in the offseason. But nothing materialized out of any deals offered.

Teagarden will have to pick it up or else he'll be with the queen sipping on tea and eating crumpets. We here at the CSN Blog want to see him succeed so we can see that wonderful NOB (Name on Back) more.

Nick Vs. Nik

what are the odds that there be 2 guys in the NHL with the same name.

Niklas Backstrom from the Wild and Nicklas backstrom from the Capitals. I'm used to seeing guys in the NBA with the same name like I think there are a few Josh Smith's and Gerrald Wallace's however Backstrom???

as far as I can tell these two NHLers are not related and even more crazy is the fact that they are both Good players. usually with same name players one is good and the other is not good. both of them ranking in the top 10 in multiple categories for their position. this Senario can be very confusing for the casual NHL viewer because Niklas is a goalie and Nicklas is plays Center. so Backstrom can shoot it and save it get the rebound and let it slip past him for the goal all in the same sequence.

My question is this: "Is Backstrom like Smith over in finland and Sweden... or is it just a freak coincidence"

Power Tool + Musician= Crazy Sports Name

Maryland Terrapins

Sander Beck #30

Freshman

Right Handed Pitcher

6'3"/ 195 lbs

Bats: R Throws: R

This fine upstanding young gentleman can't help his name. But really who names their kid after a power tool and not even a really cool power tool. C'mon can't you name your kid Saw, Hammer Drill, or compound miter saw. Anything is better than Sander.

Sander Beck is a freshman at Maryland where he has compiled a 0-0 record with a 5.40 ERA with 13 K's and 11 BB's. He is projected to be a starter next year with the Terps with improved command of his pitches.

He is an excellent student he graduated high school with a 3.42 GPA (Hey that's better than his ERA). He also is into Latin? He is a 3 time silver medalist in the National Latin Exam and won some other Latin Award too. With his latin he is also a state champion chess player. Nerd Much?

On his bio for Maryland it also lists his Volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity and the Special Olympics. The CSN Blog gives him 2 thumbs up for that.

Although, Sander Beck must be an upstanding young man his parents needed to rethink their naming strategy. What I mean is when you combine a wimpy power tool with a weird musician that doesn't equal a good name. It equals a Crazy Sports Name. It can flow into a simple equation which I'm sure Sander Beck would like:

Power Tool + Musician= Crazy Sports Name

Hey Beer- Man!

Vanderbilt Commodores

Sean Bierman #18
(BEER-min)

Sophomore

Relief Pitcher

6'0"/ 190lbs.

Bats: L Throws: L

Beirman is a relief pitcher for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Currently he has pitched 29.1 innings and has recorded 27 stikeouts with only 12 walks.
He has an ERA of 4.19 with a 2-1 record.
Not a bad pitcher especially when they come from New Jersey.
And apparently his favorite vacation spot is St. Thomas. Who wouldn't want to go to St. Thomas after living in Jersey.

So for all you fans out there who are in need of relief in the middle of the game call on the Bierman and he'll get you through the later innings.

HEHEHE

Sorry for my slacking on posting for all of you who like hearing about NHL names.

Today's post is very simple. i picked it because it makes me laugh

Anton Babchuk (AN-tawn bab-CHUCK)

Maybe there is something wrong with me but if that last name doesn't make you giggle at least a little bit then I think there is something wrong with you.

Fun Fact about babCHUCK, according to NHL.com this is his first playoff season yet his name appears on the Stanley Cup as a member of the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes

Enjoy

Another Fecal Matter

Florida Gators

21
Justin Poovey
(Pooh-VEE)

Redshirt Freshman

Pitcher

6'0"/195lbs

Bats: Right/Throws: Right

Poovey is from Great Falls, NC. He missed all of last year's season with a medical redshirt. Although he was out last season he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. How can this be? The kid did not play at all but still is named to an Honor roll. A medical redshirt means that you can gain elgibility for another year due to an injury. So this guy can actually be on the Academic Honor Roll for 5 years and play for 4?

On Wednesday, Pooh-vee pitched an inning of relief in the Gators in a win versus Stetson University. In that inning he walked two and struck out none with no earned runs. This season he has appeared in 7 games but have given up 12 earned runs. His ERA is 5.89 and he has 9 K's. Poovey is the workhorse for the Florida bullpen but the work doesn't look that good with his ERA and earned runs.

Poovey's name gets him a mention on the CSN Blog but his work this season is a bunch of bull.

Sunday Afternoons will Never be the Same

CSN Blog will take today off and pay respects to a Philadelphia Legend.
Harry Kalas.

Although I have not lived my entire life here in the Philadelphia region. Over the past few years I have grown to love the sweet baritone voice of Harry the K. My Sunday Afternoons would consist of me listening to Harry do the play by play with my eyes closed slowly drifting in and out of sleep, with occasional interruptions by Harry getting excited about a play. That he did very well. With his trademark "Outta Here!" Harry would draw me into games with welcomed reminders of days and years past. The wealth of knowledge he shared with the fan was only matched by his witty and warm sensibilities on and off the air.

Today I remember Harry the K and know that my Sunday afternoons will never be the same.

Torgerstache!

Brigham Young University Cougars

Blake Torgerson #32
(Tor-gur-son)

Junior

Pitcher

6'5"/220lbs

Throws: R Bats: R

Look at that amazing upper lip! Torgerson is a better than average pitcher from Westminster, CA. He is a junior on the BYU squad that has posted a 20-13 record this year. Torgy as he is affectionately called by the Cougar faithful has a 4-2 record with a 5.62 ERA. In his most recent start Torgerson pitched a complete game 2 hit shut out with two walks and two strikeouts against the Air Force Academy. Amazingly in his 8 games this season Torgy only has 7 walks.

We here at the CSN Blog like his name but the Torgerstache clinched his appearance. Keep up the Tom Selick ways and we might see more of him in the future!

Axel Grease

The longest tenured Boston Bruin P.J. Axelsson (AK shil suhn), may not be known for his for his goal scoring, or fancy play. but this gritty player has managed to stick around on Boston Since 1997. I originally picked this name because I just thought it was cool then while doing some research I stumbled upon what his real name is. The Wikipedia entry for Axelsson claims that his full name is Anders Per-Johan Axelsson..... ummmmm.... No wonder he goes by P.J. In researching his name it appears to me that his parents may have been fairly religious. Anders is a scandinavian form of Andrew (One of the Disciples of Jesus) Per is Scandinavian for Rock and Johan means "God Is Gracious"

Despite the interesting name you have gotta give credit to a guy drafted in the 7th round sticking around and actually having an impact on the game for 11 years.

Shaken, Not Stirred

Kansas State Wildcats

Nick Martini #26
(mar-tee-nee)

Freshman

Outfield- OF

5'11"/ 178lbs.

Bats: L Throws: L

Martini is a freshman at Kansas State. As of today he is batting .336 with 1 homer and 27 rbi. He has 54 total bases and plays a good bit in the outfield. He has a tremendous fielding percentage of 100%.

I had the pleasure of seeing him play against Creighton on the CBS College Sports Network. He threw out a runner at the plate. Prompting me to question whether or not his name was really Martini or did the crappy announcers mess up. Nevertheless, it was a great throw. I did not get to see him bat but per the numbers it looks as if he is doing well.

For a freshman Martini is not shaken or stirred lending him to serve up a 24-8 record with a 5-4 record in conference

A to the R to TYEW-kin

I know that I'm not that fluent in hockey names but i have never seen a pronunciation guide that I need an additional phonetic pronunciation guide of. That precisely what you get with Tampa Bay Lightning right winger. Evgeny Artyukhin (ehv-GEH-nee, ahr-TYEW-kin), since I'm not even sure how to say his name we will here by refer to him simply as "Arty"...

Arty has a bit of an interesting NHL career a 3rd round pick in 2001 Arty has only played in the NHL in 2 seasons. he appeared in 72 games in 2005-2006 and has appeared in 70 game this season. According to the wikipedia entry about arty he turned down a 475,000 contract from the lightning. His agent asked that Tampa Bay trade him claiming that the lightning were punishing him for not resigning a year before. so arty went and played for HC CSKA Moscow, recording 99 penalty min in 23 games. Arty was then officially re-signed to a two year 1.9 million dollar deal on July 7th 2008.

Arty I guess Your agent knew what he was doing. and can you please have him tell me how to say your name.

Don't Hands Me Bro!

North Carolina Tarheels (#1 Seed)

Tyler Hansbrough
(HANDS-bro)

Senior

Forward

6'9"/ 250 lbs.

Another staple of the nauseating coverage known as UNC Basketball. (Why do all the major networks give us a major dose of them every year?) Tyler Hansbrough is last years National Player of the year. Hands-Bro, is how its pronounced, seems to get the most calls I've ever seen in College Basketball since I've been alive. The man bowls his way through everyone around him and still gets the call to go his way. He quite possibly could be the biggest winer in College Basketball as well because when he does bowl through the other team and does not get a call he wines to the official.

But one thing the CSN Blog likes about Hands-Bro, is the outstanding faces he seems to make during every single game. See Upper left picture for more details. He does faces only a mother could love.

Tonight Hands-bro and his UNC teamates will take on the Michigan State spartans in a rematch of a game earlier this year. In that game on Dec. 3rd Hands-bro had 25pts and 11 boards. But, this time around he'll have to face this guy:

Goran Suton
(GORE-on SUE-tahn)

Redshirt Senior

Center

6'10"/ 245lbs.

Goran did a descent job containing Thabeet on Saturday. Now, he is the taller man against the smaller Hands-bro.

My pick for the Championship game is UNC wins by 8 or 9 when Suton gets in foul trouble leading him to shout at the ref: "Don't Hands Me Bro!"

This concludes my series on NCAA Tournament names. Wednesday we'll begin to look at some College Baseball names and some MLB names for a couple of weeks.

Tha-BEET Goes On

UCONN Huskies (#1 Seed)

Hasheem Thabeet #34
(ha-SHEEM tuh-BEET)

Junior

Center

7'3"/ 263lbs.

We all know this guy! The possible player of the year in Men's College Basketball. ESPN's constant coverage of the big man is nothing short of nauseating. The problem with this coverage is that they pronounce his name wrong. According to the pronunciation guide I found it is tuh-Beet not Tha-Beet. His name is definitely worthy to be included in the CSN Blog but the name appearing on his jersey and most news medias is wrong.

His given name at birth is Hashim Thabit Manka. But it is custom in his native country of Tanzania to drop the name of your father once he has died. But it doesn't end there we now see a different spelling of his name. Apparently, the American media outlets could not keep his name the same spelling and had to match it as closely with the pronunciation as possible so, hence we get Hasheem Thabeet.

Thabeet is most certainly a top five pick in this year's NBA draft. We here at the CSN Blog look forward to seeing Hashim at the next level where he can continue his development as an outstanding shot blocker and defender. With his progress still being fine tuned we know that Tha-Beet will go on!

Goals: None..... Assists: None....

That was the beginning of the season notes for NY Ranger from yaroslavl, Russia Artem Anisimov (AHR-tehm, a-NEE-see-mawv). The Former 2nd round pick in 2006 has not been able to log many minuets this season. Having a total ice time of 9:27 for the season.
No goals No assists, No Penalties. 1 shot. and an Even Plus Minus. His only action coming against Atlanta on Feb 3rd.

I'm not even sure why NHL.com put up any stats about him under their notes tab if they were just going to keep putting up none.

EE for Effort?

Michigan State Spartans (#2 Seed)

Idong Ibok #00

(EE-dong EE-bock)

Senior

Center

6'11"/ 260lbs.

EE-dong is a senior Center from Lagos, Nigeria. His Michigan State Spartans are in Detroit to play in the Final Four. Although Idong is not much of a player in the outcome of the game points wise, only 0.4ppg and 0.8rpg, Ibok is the energy guy for the Spartans. In doing research I found that all of the pictures from this year's NCAA Tournament were of him hugging or celebrating with his team mates.

(Case and Point!)

I think that Iboc or Idunk Iblock as some of his Michigan State fans call him is only on the Spartans for one reason: GPA. Yes, Grade Point Average. He is a three time Academic All-Big Ten. His GPA helps stabalize the Michigan State team from early graduation and poor test scores. Tom Izzo knows how to coach, win, and stack the deck.

Way to Go Izzo and Ibok, CSN Blog gives you an EE for Effort! (which they will need they play Hasheem Thabeet [Profile Friday] and UConn Saturday at 6:07pm.
